Production Filming the FORUM UZH over time

The FORUM UZH, in Zurich’s central university district, will become the University of Zurich’s new main building in 2031. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, this landmark project will help secure the campus’s future and create new spaces for exchange between academia and the wider public.

Until it opens, though, the FORUM UZH is first and foremost a highly complex building project in the heart of the city – and Zurich’s largest construction site. In 2023, the University of Zurich commissioned Felix Tanner and me to document the project on film over several years. Our films open up the construction site to the public: they show what is taking shape, explain decisions and processes, and give a voice to the people who plan, oversee and build it. In this way, a major project that is difficult to access from the outside becomes easier to understand.

This ongoing film coverage does more than record progress on site. It creates transparency, explains connections and puts faces to the project. When a large construction site causes disruption over several years, genuine behind-the-scenes insights can build understanding and trust. The films are published in the FORUM UZH digital magazine, developed with Raffinerie, alongside interviews and photo stories. Over time, they will form a living archive of the building – and an ongoing dialogue with the public.

A film about a university open to the city, its architecture and urban design: how Herzog & de Meuron are opening the university up to the city.

The film about the prototype of the multifunctional lantern shows how lighting, architecture and building technology will come together.

The film “Grüne Giganten” shows how the trees for tomorrow’s square are already growing – and how they will help create a place for local people and nature.

The film “Quellen des Baulärms” shows where construction noise comes from, how it is measured and kept in check – to give the neighbourhood and nature room to breathe.
